Stephen Lewis Villages
Villages
Staff and students are assigned to one of four Villages (idea similar
to house organizations in other schools) and are given a Village T-shirt
upon registration. The Stephen Lewis Villages are named after four Canadian
heroes of social justice: June Callwood (red T-shirts), Craig Kielburger
(black), Agnes Macphail (white) and David Suzuki (gray). The smaller
groupings within the school allow all students to feel connected in
our large building and foster friendly competition and spirit among
the Villages.
Winner of the 2006-2007 Village
Cup is Kielburger.
In our cafeteria, hang four large banners
- as pictured above - which were created for us by Flags Unlimited.
Each banner has a quote from the individual:
Kielburger: With
determination, young people can make their voices heard.
Callwood: The
only way to make the world safer for yourself is to treat others well.
Macphail: I
want for myself what I want for everyone - absolute equality.
Suzuki: Each
day you invent the future with the choices you make.
The Green Team
and Community Hours
Students gained community hours for voluntary work by helping with the
Stephen Lewis Diversity Garden. Beginning in April, members of the newly
formed Green Team met on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school to dig
flower beds, mulch, and water recently purchased and donated plant materials.
Continuing work by the Green Team will resume in September. Students
interested in joining should contact Mr. Ellis.
Thanks to the TD Friends
of the Environment for their generous support of
the Diversity Garden. For the second year in row this organization has
granted us $2000 towards our purchases of garden materials. Through
their support, this spring we were able purchase materials to plant
a windscreen on the north and west sides of the garden. Thanks goes
to Ms Durst and her class for planting the recently purchased cedars.
Thanks, too, goes to Mr. Sawicki and his class for their contribution.
General Information
Guidance Services
The Guidance office is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
during the school year. Counsellors will be available to correct timetable
errors during the first week of school. All timetable corrections must
be handled during this week.
Locks and Lockers
Lockers and locks are loaned to students for their use though the school
year. Students should keep their lock combination secret and are advised
not to bring large amounts of money or valuable items to the school,
as these are sometimes lost or stolen.
During physical
education classes, students should leave wallets and jewelry in lockers
in the gym change room area or in their school locker. Lockers are the
property of the Peel District School Board and students use these on
a loan basis for the school year.
Over 18
Please be advised that Peel District School Board staff, including teachers
and administrators, will communicate with the parent(s)/guardian(s)
of an adult student (age 18 or older) regarding educational matters
unless and until that adult student provides direction in writing that
all further communication by school staff regarding education matters
must be with that student only. If you have any questions regarding
this practice or if you wish to provide written direction to the school,
please speak to your vice-principal or principal.
Resource Centre
The Library Resource Centre is open for research, study and reading
and is available for individual, group and class use. It is also regarded
as a classroom area for teaching information skills. Hours are 8:30
am to 3:40 pm.
Student
Parking
Students may park their vehicles on school property (parking lot on
west side of school only) under the following conditions:
-
Student must register his/her vehicle(s) with
the main office in order to park in a Stephen Lewis Secondary School
parking lot.
-
Maximum speed is 10 km/h
-
Students must not park in front of the school
-
Vehicle must be locked at all times
-
Vehicle is to be used for transportation, not
a place to sit or smoke or play music
-
Failure to follow these rules can result in parking
privileges being revoked
The Doors of Stephen
Lewis
In preparation for Stephen Lewis' visit on September 5, 2006, students
decorated their home room doors on a theme of social justice and equity.
Take a look.
Your
Time Counts (40 hours)
Students entering grade 9 must complete 40 hours of volunteer work as
one of the Ministry requirements for their high school diploma. The
aim is to encourage students to become actively involved in making positive
contributions to their community. For more information, visit the Board's
website: Your
Time Counts. Forms are available in the Guidance
Department or from the Board website. The form is called "Activity
Record".
