Why Establish a School Council?
Two decades of research have shown that children have an advantage
in school when their parents encourage, support and are involved in
their school activities. All Peel District School Board elementary and
secondary schools have School councils. The main goal of the School
Council is to improve student learning. Councils focus on helping young
people succeed in school and support communication between the home
and the school. As a parent-guardian, it is important that you make
your voice count by participating in the School Council elections or
running for a position on the School Council.
What is a School Council?
A School Council is a group of elected and volunteer members that will
provide advice to the principal and, where appropriate, the Board, on
educational issues.
The membership of a School Council is expected to
include at least six parent-guardians, one teacher, one non-teaching
member, one student, the principal, and one community member.
The School Council will advise the principal and the
Peel District School Board on various issues, including: local school
year calendar, Code of Conduct, curriculum goals and priorities, criteria
for selection of principals, school budget priorities.
Do parents/guardians need special skills or
experience
to become a School Council member?
Commitment and interest are the two most important requirements.
Because the School Council will focus on a broad range of issues, many
different skills and experiences will be valuable, through not essential.
Parents-guardians are asked to make either a one or two year commitment,
if possible.
Members of the School Council are expected to participate
in Council meetings and information/training sessions, act as a link
between School Council and the community, encourage the participation
of parents from all groups, and of other people within the school community.
