SAC Fundraising Update, January 2009
The 2008-2009 SAC started the semester off with some activities to get students excited and school spirit pumping! In October, SAC members got involved with helping our Grade 9 students become acquainted with the school by hosting the Grade 9 barbeque. All Grade 9 students received a barbeque lunch and had the chance to participate in activities that were happening all around the school.

SAC also hosted Halloween Spirit Week and ran the first dance of the year. Students and staff dressed up in black, orange and in costumes. Teachers and students were involved in a costume contest. The 2008 winner of the first annual Staff Costume Contest was the Communications Department. The Science Department was defeated, but are already planning their costumes for next year.

During the month of December, SAC showed spirit by giving back to the community. Michael Chang ran a video game tournament and entry to the tournament was a non-perishable food item and all donations went to the Eden Food Bank. Santa also came to visit Stephen Lewis S.S. and students were able to have their pictures taken with him. On the last day of school, students and staff wore their pyjamas, which made the wintry weather a little easier to cope with.

The SAC will bring more activities to Stephen Lewis Secondary School in 2009. Students should look forward to free hot chocolate, March Madness spirit days and our school’s charity week. Stay tuned for more exciting events brought to you by the Stephen Lewis Secondary School SAC!

SAC Fundraising Update, June 2008
This year, Stephen Lewis Secondary School has worked to raise funds for local and global charities. Students, staff and parents supported the Terry Fox Run, the Spread the Joy campaign and the Spread the Net campaign. Our fundraising efforts ended with a bang with our April charity week, which was a great success. Our students and staff came together to raise funds for Free the Children, a Canadian-based organization that works to develop education, healthcare, alternative income projects and improved water and sanitation conditions in a number of countries around the world.

Our goal was to raise $8,500 in order to build a school in Sierra Leone which is located in west Africa. This nation is one of the poorest in the world and experienced 11 years of civil unrest. It is estimated that 10,000 children fought as child soldiers in this civil war. It was amazing to see our students, staff, parents and community members generously commit their time and their money to this wonderful cause. After many bake sales, sponge tosses, hair shaving sessions, a basketball game and community car wash and barbeque, our school was able to exceed our goal and we raised $10, 200, seeing through on our dream to build a school in Sierra Leone. The Free the Children representative who came to accept our donation was amazed that we were able to raise so much money in such a short period of time. Thank you to all of the students, staff and parents who supported us during charity week, and through out the year. In total, or school has raised close to $20,000 for various charities. We couldn't have accomplished our fundraising goals without you!
