Peel students learn how to express themselves critically on social justice issues

Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Mississauga will host the Critical Thinking Through the Arts conference on February 15. Through drama and visual arts, this conference is designed to challenge students and teachers to think more critically about equity and the importance of social justice. More than 300 secondary teachers and students from 14 Peel schools will be participating in the conference.

"This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about social justice and equity," says Martha Wood, principal of Stephen Lewis school. "This conference will allow students to use drama and visual arts to express their ideas and opinions on these issues."

The conference will feature a keynote speech by Dwayne Morgan, a writer, producer, motivation speaker and an award-winning spoken work artist. He will be speaking about identity, impact and influence, and will challenge students to reflect upon three crucial questions: Who am I? How do I see the world? and How do I affect change? Students will also participate in workshops on gender roles, media literacy and social change through music, drama and photography.

As part of the project, students were asked to write artist statements about their work. These will be on display at the museum as well and will provide insight into the artists' feelings about Mississauga and their place in the city.
