Music Lynx
Our group of musical leaders takes the responsibility quite
seriously when involving Lewis-Music with SLSS life. We plan, organize,
produce and implement Arts Nights (with the Integrated Arts Council),
we advocate for the importance of music in all schools in our family.
Further, we encourage student/staff involvement in Lewis-Music, create
and upkeep our website and promote our department through various means
and initiatives.
IF YOU
WISH TO GET INVOLVED, check out the Application
for Music Lynx (.pdf).
Concert Bands
We experience the B300 level of band repertoire in our largest
teams in the Music Department. Preparing for festivals, competitions
and concerts is our goal; getting these large groups to develop into
musically sensitive machines is our mission. Other Lewis ensembles are
based on the configuration of the Concert Bands. All instrumental music
students are mandated to be involved in: The
Junior Lynx Winds and/or The
Senior Lynx Winds; others are required to audition.
Wind Ensemble
Playing at B300, this small ensemble involves the process of
each performer to know their own part, to share their art. With the
rest of the team, producing a cornucopia of beautiful sounds is our
goal. The Lewis Winds represents
the upper wood winds from the configurations of larger concert bands.
Stage Band
Stage Band brings out the funky, groovy aspects of Lewis-Music.
The Lewis Rhythm experiences
music brought to us from the juxtaposition of African rhythms with European
harmonies, with a flare of North American experiences. This ensemble
represents the mixture of saxes, brass, kit, bass and electric guitar
from the configurations of larger concert bands.
Sax Quartet
We bring the instruments introduced a mere 100 years ago, by
Adolf Sax, alive in our quartet. The Siwel
Sax Quartet explore and experience music from the 20th
Century written for such a vibrantly, musically sensitive and quite
adaptable instrument. This quartet represents auditioned performers
from the configurations of larger concert bands.
Flute Quartet
We use one of the Western world's oldest instruments to introduce
a subtle, yet quite powerful, sound to Lewis-Music. We perform pieces
written and transcribed for flute quartet at a B400 level. The
Lewis Flute Quartet represents auditioned performers
from the configurations of larger concert bands.
World Drumming
Taking hand drumming a step further, we perform pieces and
rhythms indicative to cultures across our planet. We improvise sounds
that give Lewis-Music a unique experience. With djembes, dumbeks and
tubanos we create pieces indicative to many, many of our cultures at
SLSS. World Lynx is open to every
SLSS student!
Guitar Ensemble
This group takes the softness and subtlety of the guitar and
explores its vastness in all types of music from traditional guitar
to rock. We investigate the unique nature of the guitar and share in
its cultural malleability. All guitar music students are mandated to
be involved in The Lewis Strings.
