Library Resource Centre

We Welcome Students to the 2008-2009 School Year

As the new school year begins, the library continues to be a busy, vibrant place. For students who are new to SLSS and the Library Resource Centre, remember to always have your student card with you so you can use a computer, check out a book, or borrow other supplies (scissors, glue sticks, etc.). Also, food and non-water beverages are not allowed inside the library premises so that our print materials and computers can remain damage-free. So, just eat and drink before you enter!

Once the White Pine book list is released in October, we would like to hear from all of our many avid book readers who would like to be a part of the White Pine Book Club. So, keep your ears and eyes perched and ready for an announcement on this new library club.

Our new library team this year consists of Mrs. B-G, Ms Devani, and Miss Thompson. Together, we are here to help you with your reading, research and learning needs. We look forward to an exciting year in the library.

Library Update
From The Principal's Newsletter, January 2008

The Library continues to be a popular spot in the school. We are very busy before school, and at lunch. Students are on the computers, doing research, printing assignments, completing group projects, and taking out books to read. Our comfy chairs are filled with students browsing magazines or checking the latest Guinness world records.

The READ program of fifteen minutes every morning in period one continues to encourage students to find and read books for personal interest. With 1900 checkouts since September, you can tell that many students of Stephen Lewis Secondary School are avid readers. Special congratulations to Ms Sawicki's home form (2C1) for having the most checkouts from September to January.

We've started a Student Book Club that is meeting monthly. Students meet to discuss books they have decided to read for personal interest. They generate their own discussion questions that may often lead to other interesting topics of discussion. New members are always welcome! Meetings are held once a month on Tuesday's after school—in the Library, of course!

Since the three chess boards are in such demand during lunch and before school, we have started a Chess Club which meets in the Library after school on Wednesdays. Starting in second semester, six members will form the Chess Team to compete against other schools in Peel.

As well as continuing to buy books to add to our collection, we are working on improving our library web page to provide students with links to appropriate sites to complete their work at home. Check the Library page under Departments on the school website to see the changes!
