Post-Secondary Information
The
Student Services department helps students with academic and career
planning, both by teaching classes and working with students individually.
Counsellors are also available to help students with personal concerns
and to make referrals to community agencies and social services. Each
student has been assigned a counsellor.

Apprenticeship Trip
On April 10, 25 students travelled to the LIUNA Local 183 Training Centre
in Vaughan to learn about the skilled trades and apprenticeship training.
They witnessed bricklaying in action as current apprentices worked on
a home, and other construction trades in operation. They visited Humber
College, where they toured the Horticulture/Landscape, Electrical and
Plumbing departments to hear from the staff about their programs and
the exciting opportunities in these occupations. It was a great to learn
about this valuable pathway.
Accident Awareness
In May, our grade 11 students were treated to a graphic and informative
"Accident Awareness" assembly sponsored by State Farm. A former
accident investigator brought a wrecked vehicle to graphically explain
how a small misjudgement can end and affect lives.
Leadership Conferences
Three of our grade 10 students attended the week long leadership conference
"Waterloo Unlimited". Congratulations to these young ladies
on their admission and participation in the program. We are also proud
to announce that two of our senior students will be participating in
the SHAD Valley program this summer.
Guidance and Career Education
Counsellors are available to help students make
important decisions about courses and future plans, and also to help
talk through whatever concerns you may have. Guidance services are available
to everyone. Simply come in and ask the guidance secretary to make an
appointment for you to see your counsellor, if you
- want career information
- have concerns about your goals
- have questions about your courses
- want to know how to succeed in school
- have a personal concern
Student Services Staff
Counsellors are assigned to students alphabetically
according to the student's surname. Each student has a counsellor.
- Mrs. Elaine Quennell, Head of Guidance (A-J)
- Mrs. Kim Burroughs (K-M and ESL)
- Mrs. Ronnie Fisher, Counsellor (N-Z)
- Mrs. Kathy Dubeau (Co-operative Education)
Parents/guardians wishing to speak to their child's
counsellor should contact Annmarie Chorley, Guidance Secretary, at 905-363-0289
ext 420.
Co-operative Education
Co-operative Education integrates classroom
learning with practical experience in the workplace. Students at Stephen
Lewis Secondary School will be given this opportunity to learn through
experience in second semester. Students can earn three or four credits
in co-op during semester two.
Educational Planning
As students and their parents/guardians
look ahead in their educational planning, they should check out these
websites
and take a look at our Career
Planner Form (.pdf).
Community Involvement Activities
As stated in Ontario Secondary Schools, Grades
9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements 1999 (OSS), every student
who begins secondary school during or after the 1999-2000 school year
must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities
as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
(OSSD). The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage
students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility
and the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting
and strengthening their communities. Community involvement activities
are part of the school's program.
More information is available in the school

Timetable
Changes
All students are encouraged to make thoughtful
and appropriate course choices, in collaboration with their parents/guardians,
teachers and counsellor. Some changes, however, may be accommodated
at certain times in the school year. Student must check announcements
for the next opportunity to change their selections. It must be understood
that, due to staffing and timetable restrictions, not all change requests
can be accommodated.
